About the Campaign

The UK’s proscription (banning) of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) makes us all complicit in Palestinian dehumanisation. By proscribing Hamas, the UK government is forcing our complicity in the murder of Palestinians. The Nakba (catastrophe) never ended. Israel has killed more Palestinians in the past 78 years combined than any of the proscribed Palestinian organisations, and yet, the UK government continues to enable and embolden Israeli war crimes, while criminalising the legal and lawfully protected right to resistance under International Law.

It is important to note: Hamas is not a proscribed group by the United Nations. Reports indicate only roughly 9 out of 195 countries have fully designated Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

In April 2025, Riverway Law filed a landmark legal application to the UK Home Secretary to remove Hamas from the government's list of proscribed organisations. One year on, now Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will be filing her reasons and evidence for rejecting the application for de-proscription on 20 May 2026. Now is the time for a public advocacy campaign in support of the case to de-proscribe Hamas.
