About the Campaign
The UK’s proscription (banning) of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) makes us all complicit in Palestinian dehumanisation. By proscribing Hamas, the UK government is forcing our complicity in the murder of Palestinians. The Nakba (catastrophe) never ended. Israel has killed more Palestinians in the past 78 years combined than any of the proscribed Palestinian organisations, and yet, the UK government continues to enable and embolden Israeli war crimes, while criminalising the legal and lawfully protected right to resistance under International Law.
It is important to note: Hamas is not a proscribed group by the United Nations. Reports indicate only roughly 9 out of 195 countries have fully designated Hamas as a terrorist organisation.
In April 2025, Riverway Law filed a landmark legal application to the UK Home Secretary to remove Hamas from the government's list of proscribed organisations. A few months later, in June 2025, CAGE International also filed an application to deproscribe the group, highlighting the weaponisation of Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000, which has been used to criminalise online posts, public speech, and peaceful assembly.
Now is the time for a public advocacy campaign in support of the case to deproscribe Hamas.
